Sustainable innovation at Montana: recycling, eco-steel and climate protection

back to Backstage

Montana has relied on wooden pallets as a packaging solution since the introduction of its sandwich production. Although polystyrene blocks would have been a cheaper alternative, they would have required considerable investment in a changeover and could only have been disposed of via the waste cycle. In order to encourage the return of packaging material, drivers received a small bonus for each returned unit years ago. Even back then, some companies voluntarily collected the wooden pallets on construction sites and enabled them to be reused by Montana's transport team.

The MONTARECYCLE project was launched in 2015 to optimise and expand this process and make it better known. The aim was to introduce a logistics concept for the multiple use of wooden pallets for sandwich elements and at the same time increase the return rate of packaging boards. The concept was successfully established on the market just a few months after its launch, and many customers have since been actively involved in returning recyclable materials to the cycle. A real win-win situation for both customers and Montana.

In the blog article MONTARECYCLE: How to make your work even more sustainable, you can find out exactly how the concept works and how you too can become part of this initiative to reduce your carbon footprint with minimal effort.

For Montana, this project is one of many steps on the way to a more sustainable future. The parent company Tata Steel NL has been working for many years to reduce CO2 emissions. The steelworks in IJmuiden in the Netherlands is already one of the three most CO2-efficient in the world. The carbon dioxide emissions of the steel produced there are around 7 per cent below the European average and around 20 per cent below the global average.
The Zeremis® brand, which stands for ‘zero emissions’, was also launched. With the Zeremis® Carbon Lite solution for green steel, you as a planner, customer or builder have the opportunity to purchase steel that is 30 per cent CO2-reduced and improve your own carbon footprint. Read more here.

Montana has set itself the goal of being CO2-neutral by 2030. With the commissioning of the large-scale photovoltaic system on the company's roof on 7 March 2023, the MONTARECYCLE programme to reduce waste and the Zeremis® Carbon Lite solution for sustainable steel, Montana is well equipped to contribute to a more climate-friendly world together with its customers.
